Short Film From Michoacán, selected at the 13th FICM, to compete at the Cannes Film Festival

We are delighted to announce that Ernesto Martínez Bucio’s Las razones del mundo/The Reasons in the World, a short film that was part of the Michoacán section at the 13th edition of FICM, will compete as part of the Cinefondation section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

The Cinéfondation section was created by Gilles Jacob as a way in which to support and promote a new generation of filmmakers. Each year, the section screens 15-20 short- or medium-length films from film schools around the world. In this edition, Las razones del mundo, which was produced by the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC), is one of 18 short films selected from the 2,300+ film schools that applied.

Las razones del mundo is the story of a pregnant woman who works as a kidnapper. She finds herself conflicted when one of the victims turns out to be a child. In the words of the character: “I can’t tell you my name. I am three months pregnant. They pay my boyfriend and I to look after people. We want to go far away. We’ve saved up enough money, but they brought us one last guest. He’s eight years old. We’ve never looked after a child. He’s sick and my boyfriend doesn’t want to do anything about it. I shouldn’t take him out in case M. finds out. I’m afraid that something will happen; I hope they pay the ransom soon.”

Ernesto Martínez Bucio is originally from Uruapan, Michoacán. He studied Communication Science at the Universidad Jesuita de Guadalajara (ITESO) and Cinematography at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC) in Mexico City. The director has had work shown at four separate editions of the Morelia International Film Festival; at the 6th FICM he screened his fiction short film Benjamín (2007); at the 9th FICM he participated with Cenizas (2011); at the 10th FICM he won the Studio 5 de Mayo Special Prize for his short film La madre (2012), and his last short The Reasons in the World (2015) was part of the 13th FICM.

In the same section, the Mexican director Marta Hernaiz Pidal will screen her short film Dobro, which was produced by the Film Factory, the film school run by the extraordinary filmmaker Béla Tarr (Special Guest at FICM in 2011).

Congratulations to both directors! For FICM it is a great honor that a short film from Michoacán has been selected at the Cannes Film Festival.
