Call for applicants: Cine Qua Non Lab Workshop

Cine Qua Non Lab Screenwriter’s Workshop will be held from August 11 to 26 in Tzintzuntzan, a small town in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. It gives independent filmmakers the opportunity to work on their feature length narrative scripts in a workshop environment structured to foster professional collaboration and high-caliber script development. Submission deadline is May 12, and results will be published on June 16.

Cine Qua Non Lab is an artists’ residency for filmmakers. Its mission is to develop independent cinema by providing a space for Mexican and international filmmakers to develop their work, bringing them together to exchange ideas, share perspectives, and find new opportunities for collaboration. The residency is located in Tzintzuntzan, a small town in the state of Michoacán, Mexico, approximately 35km from the city of Morelia. The workshop, writing, and living spaces are tucked amidst the Sierra Madre Mountains, a natural retreat overlooking Lake Pátzcuaro.

Once again, the workshop will be facilitated by Christina Lazaridi, an Academy Award nominated screenwriter for the short film One Day Crossing (2001). Christina teaches screenwriting at Columbia’s Graduate Film Division and at Princeton University, and is a mentor for European Union’s Mediterranean Film Institute. She has led screenwriting seminars in the United Arab Emirates, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and New York City, and works globally as a Story Editor and Screenwriting Consultant.

The workshop will only admit ten filmmakers. Applicants may be from any nationality and at any stage of their career, from emerging to established, including graduate (but not undergraduate) students. They must have a completed feature script ready for the revision process, (scripts for animated films are welcome). Applications may be submitted in Spanish or English; however, the workshop will be held in English and all participants will need to prepare English language scripts for the workshop sessions. Submission deadline is May 12.
