Palme D’Or Winning Film at the 12th FICM

The programming of the 12th FICM will include Winter Sleep by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, winner of the Palme d’Or 2014, the highest award given by the Cannes Film Festival. Since its premiere at the French Riviera, the film has been praised by international critics, who have described it as “stunning” (The Guardian), “mesmerizing” (Indiewire), and “a ravishingly beautiful magnum opus” (Variety).

Winter Sleep is the story of Aydin, a retired actor who owns a small hotel in the center of Anatolia with his young wife Nihal, with whom he has a stormy relationship, and his sister Necla, who is suffering after a recent divorce. In winter, when the snow begins to fall, the hotel is a refuge but also a prison that provokes even greater hostility among its inhabitants.

Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who is from Turkey, first gained international recognition with his short film Koza/Cocoon, selected in Cannes in 1995. His first two feature films Kasaba/Small Town and Mayis Sikintisi/Clouds of May won numerous awards around the world. The work of Nuri Bilge Ceylan has been well received at Cannes over the years: Uzak/Distant won the Grand Prix and Best Actor Award in 2003; in 2008 Ceylan won the Best Director Award for Uç Maymun/Three Monkeys; and in 2011 he won the Grand Prix Ex-aequo for Bir zamanlar Anadolu’da/Once Upon a Time in Anatolia. The Palme d’Or 2014 awarded to Winter Sleep is yet another recognition of the extraordinary talent of this director.

With Winter Sleep, FICM continues the tradition of presenting the winning films of the Palme d’Or in Mexico – which have been part of the programming of the festival since 2005, without exception.
