The 13th FICM Presents Award-Winning Films

Since its beginning, FICM’s program has been characterized by showing the best in contemporary cinema and its 13th edition is no exception. For the first time in Mexico, the 13th FICM will show films that were recently presented at the most important film festivals around the world and received top awards.

These are some of the internationally award-winning films that will premiere in Mexico at the 13th edition of FICM. El hijo de Saúl, by László Nemes, won the Jury Grand Prize, the FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) award, the François Chalais Prize and the Vulcan Award; The Assassin, by Hou Hsiao-Hsien, received the award for Best Director; Chronic, by Michel Franco, won the Best Screenplay Award; and The Lobster, by Yorgos Lanthimos, received the Jury Award.

Mia madre, by Nanni Moretti, won the Ecumenical Jury Award at Cannes, and the David di Donatello 2015 awards for Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actress given by the Academy of Italian Cinema, and Hrútar, by Grímur Hákonarson, which received the Un Certain Regard award in Cannes, and the Audience and Jury Awards at the 14th Transylvania International Film Festival.

Within the Official Selection of the 54th Critics’ Week, a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival, Paulina, by Santiago Mitre, won the Nespresso Grand Prize and the FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics); and La tierra y la sombra, by César Acevedo, received the Golden Camera, the France 4 Visionary Award, the SACD (Society of Authors) award and the Golden Reels Award.

In the parallel section, Directors’ Fortnight, of the Cannes Film Festival, Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse, by Arnaud Desplechin, received the SACD (Society of Authors) award; and Allende, mi abuelo Allende, by Marcia Tambutti Allende, won the Golden Eye Award.

Ingrid Bergman. En sus propias palabras, by Stig Björkman, which was presented in the Cannes Classics section, received a Special Mention.

La Peur by Damien Odoul, Magic Girl by Carlos Vermut, El hijo de Saúl by László Nemes, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, The Lobster by Yorgos Lanthimos and Chronic by Michel Franco.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, received the Public’s Award and the Grand Jury Award at the Sundance International Film Festival 2015; the Golden Space Needle Award for Best Director at the Seattle International Film Festival 2015; the Southwest Airline’s Public Award and the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Award at the Nashville Film Festival 2015; and the Truly Moving Picture award at the Heartland Film Festival 2015.

The public in Morelia can also see Cialo, by Malgorzata Szumowska, winner of the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) and Krisha, by Trey Edward Shults, which received the Jury Award at the South by Southwest Film Festival 2015.

This 13th edition of FICM will also present films such as Magic Girl, by Carlos Vermut, which won the Best Actress award at the 20th José María Forqué Film Awards Ceremony in Spain, the Best Leading Actress award at the 29th edition of the Goya Awards Ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain, and the Golden Shell award for Best Film and the Silver Shell for Best Director at the 62nd San Sebastián Film Festival.

You will also be able to see films that were presented at the 72nd edition of the Venice International Film Festival such as Desde allá, by Lorenzo Vigas, which won the Golden Lion for Best Film, the top prize awarded at the festival; Early Winter, by Michael Rowe, which received the Main Prize of the Jornadas de los Autores; and Anomalisa, by Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson, winner of the Grand Jury Award.

For the past four years, FICM has presented winning films of the Jean Vigo awards, which celebrated its 63rd edition this year. La Peur, by Damien Odoul and Le Dernier des Céfrans, by Pierre-Emmanuel Urcun are the winning films that are part of the festival’s program.
