Impulso Morelia 5 da a conocer su selección, panel de expertos y reconocimientos

El Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM) se complace en anunciar los títulos seleccionados para participar en Impulso Morelia 5, un espacio que desde 2015 propone un programa de largometrajes mexicanos en distintas fases de edición y postproducción con el objeto de generar un diálogo constructivo sobre las propuestas y ofrecerles visibilidad internacional.

Leonardo, un solitario adolescente de 16 años, camina las calles de la misteriosa ciudad en la que vive buscando la libertad y las emociones que lo hagan sentirse vivo, al tiempo que se enfrenta al abandono de las personas a quienes más ama.


La vocera (documental)

La Vocera narra el viaje de María de Jesús Patricio, la primera mujer indígena en postularse a la presidencia de México, revelando la naturaleza y la complejidad del racismo y la discriminación de género en una sociedad cambiante.


Santa Bárbara (ficción)

Bárbara es una boliviana que lleva doce años en Barcelona, trabaja como empleada doméstica y vive con su chica Maribel. Un día su madre le informa que han detenido a Ulises, su hijo mayor, y Bárbara decide traerlo a vivir con ella.


Yermo (documental)

Esta es una película construida desde la impericia, desde la incomprensión, desde la sorpresa y el asombro mutuo; es una película que reflexiona en torno a la idea de comunidad, a la relación del hombre y su entorno en el que la naturaleza, bestias y seres humanos dependen de cada uno para seguir habitando un mundo que se supone yermo.

Estos largometrajes serán presentados en funciones reservadas a público profesional y a un panel internacional de expertos de la industria que el FICM ha convocado con el objeto de crear un espacio destinado a la reflexión sobre los proyectos elegidos. Adicionalmente, se otorgan distintos reconocimientos y apoyos que buscan contribuir de manera directa a la conclusión, promoción y visibilidad de las propuestas.

Las proyecciones se llevarán a cabo los días 20, 21 y 22 de octubre de 2019 en el marco de la 17ª edición del FICM. La programación de Impulso Morelia 5 estuvo a cargo de José María Riba.

PANEL INTERNACIONAL DE EXPERTOS

El FICM constituye un panel internacional de expertos para analizar con espíritu exigente, respetuoso y constructivo cada propuesta del programa de Impulso Morelia 5 y establecer un diálogo útil para sus autores. El panel estará compuesto por John Bailey (USA), Katrin Pors (Dinamarca), Alice Labadie (Francia), Jorge Michel Grau (México), Jim Stark (USA), Alejandro Arenas (Francia) y Meinolf Zurhorst (Alemania).

John Bailey. Los más de 50 años de carrera de John Bailey en el cine incluyen la fotografía de grandes películas comerciales de Hollywood como Gente como uno (1980), de Robert Redford; Reencuentro (1983), Silverado (1985) y Un tropiezo llamado amor (1988), de Lawrence Kasdan; El Día de la Marmota (1993), de Harold Ramis; En la línea de fuego (1993), de Wolfgang Petersen; Mejor… imposible (1997), de James L. Brooks; Un verano en pantalones (2005) y Grandes amigos (2015), de Ken Kwapis; y Un camino hacia mí (2013), de Jim Rash y Nat Faxon; y de filmes poco convencionales como Tough Guys Don’t Dance (1987), de Norman Mailer; That Championship Season (1982), de Jason Miller; Swimming to Cambodia (1987), de Jonathan Demme; A Brief History of Time (1991), de Errol Morris; y The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002), de Brett Morgen y Nanette Burstein. Fue presidente de la Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas entre 2017 y 2019, y desde hace 15 años ha sido el director de la rama de cinefotógrafos. Integra el consejo directivo de la American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), así como de la Junta Nacional de Conservación de Cine de la Biblioteca del Congreso de Estados Unidos.

Katrin Pors. Productora danesa conocida por tender puentes entre América Latina y Europa del norte. Tiene más de diez años de experiencia como productora, ejecutiva y coproductora en varios proyectos junto con algunos de los más valorados directores del panorama del cine independiente de autor contemporáneo, como Amat Escalante, Annemarie Jacir, Joachim Trier y Ralitza Petrova. Sus trabajos más recientes incluyen Pájaros de verano (2018), de Ciro Guerra y Cristina Gallego; Petra (2018), de Jaime Rosales;  Monos 2019), de Alejandro Landes, y Hvítur, Hvítur Dagur (2019), de Hlynur Palmason. Es cofundadora de Snowglobe, productora con sede en Copenhague.

Alice Labadie. Encargada de adquisiciones para Le Pacte, empresa francesa de distribución y ventas internacionales que pone especial atención en el cine de autor. Los títulos más recientes de Le Pacte incluyen I, Daniel Blake (2016), de Ken Loach; Shoplifters (2018), de Hirokazu Kore-eda; The Florida Project (2017), de Sean Baker; y El reino (2018) y Madre (2017), de Rodrigo Sorogoyen. Labadie también ha mantenido una relación estrecha con el cine de Carlos Reygadas y Amat Escalante, y trabajado en el desarrollo de películas como Pájaros de verano (2018), de Ciro Guerra y Cristina Gallego.

Jorge Michel Grau. Su ópera prima Somos lo que hay (2010), seleccionada en la 42ª Quincena de los Realizadores, compitió por la Cámara de Oro en Cannes 2010 y fue acreedora a numerosos premios en certámenes internacionales. Jorge Michel Grau dirigió los proyectos Chalán, producido por Canal 22 e IMCINE, y 72, producido por Juan José Campanella y Canana. Incursionó en Estados Unidos con la película Big Sky y la serie Demencia. En 2016 estrenó 7:19, primera película mexicana en tener estreno mundial en Netflix. En 2019 estrenará su más reciente película, Perdida, producida por Dynamo Colombia y Urujuru México.

Jim Stark. Productor estadounidense que financia, desarrolla, produce y vende largometrajes desde 1983. Ha trabajado con Jim Jarmusch, Alex Rockwell, Gregg Araki y Adrienne Shelly, entre otros. Coescribió y coprodujo Cold Fever (1995) con Fridrik Thor Fridriksson; Factotum (2005) con Bent Hammer; y Mirage (2014) con Szabolcs Hajdu. Recientemente estuvo asociado a los filmes Tempestad (2016), de Tatiana Huezo; La región salvaje (2016), de Amat Escalante; Nuestro tiempo (2018), de Carlos Reygadas; y Foxtrot (2017), de Samuel Maoz.

Alejandro Arenas. Español afincado en París, trabajó en Les films du Bélier y en 2012 se integró en equipo de Les films du Worso, de Sylvie Pialat y Benoît Quainon, donde es responsable de las producciones internacionales de la compañía, que pone el acento en autores singulares (Abderrahmane Sissako, Lisandro Alonso, Carlos Vermut). Desde 2018, Alejandro Arenas integra la comisión Cinémas du Monde del Centro Nacional del Cine (CNC) francés, presidida por Charles Tesson.

Meinolf Zurhorst. Tras estudiar Historia del Arte, Antropología, y Cine y Televisión, ha trabajado como crítico cinematográfico y publicado cerca de 20 libros sobre cine y actores. En los años ochenta cofundó una compañía de producción de contenidos para la televisión alemana, así como una compañía de producción y postproducción cinematográfica. Ha coescrito, dirigido y producido varios documentales sobre el cine y la televisión alemana. En 1992 se convirtió en commissioning editor del departamento de ARTE en Estrasburgo, y en 1994 pasó a ser cabeza de este departamento. En el 2000 comenzó a dirigir el departamento de ARTE del canal alemán ZDF y desde 2017 fue jefe de ficción en ZDF/arte. Zurhorst ha sido miembro del jurado en festivales como Guadalajara, Sarajevo, Sao Paulo, Thessaloniki, Tallinn, Istanbul, entre otros. Ha fungido como tutor en Mediterranean Film Business School, en los programas de la EAVE, International Film School Cologne y la Film Factory de Béla Tarr. Desde febrero de 2019 se desempeña como consultor, conferencista, tutor y productor.


RECONOCIMIENTOS DE IMPULSO MORELIA 5

Los reconocimientos que se otorgarán suman más de un millón 300 mil de pesos en especie y en efectivo:

  • El Premio Cinépolis Distribución consiste en $250,000 pesos en efectivo para cubrir procesos y servicios de postproducción y/o promoción. El premio lo adjudicará el panel internacional de expertos invitados a Impulso Morelia 5 a una de las propuestas seleccionadas.
  • El portal digital de información especializada LatAmcinema.com ofrece una campaña promocional de una página de publicidad en uno de los números de la revista, con costo aproximado de USD$1,500.
  • Ambulante otorga $50,000 pesos en efectivo, destinados a completar la postproducción de un documental, junto con la oferta de inclusión del mismo en una futura edición de la Gira de Documentales Ambulante.
  • Estudios Churubusco Azteca otorga $800,000 pesos en servicios de postproducción y sonido THX a una de las propuestas. El apoyo no incluye materiales, honorarios de operadores ni licencia Dolby, y tiene una vigencia de dos años.
  • Un proyecto participante contará con una semana de mezcla de sonido y una más de corrección de color en los prestigiosos Estudios Splendor Omnia, en Tepoztlán, con un valor aproximado de $200,000 pesos. No incluye los honorarios de los técnicos.

The Last Feathers (fiction, first time director)

Leonardo, a lonely 16-year-old teenager, walks the streets of the mysterious city where he lives, seeking freedom and emotions that make him feel alive, while facing the abandonment of the people he loves the most.


The Spokeswoman (documentary)

The Spokeswoman narrates the trip of María de Jesús Patricio, the first indigenous woman to run for president in Mexico, revealing the nature and complexity of racism and gender discrimination in a changing society.


Santa Bárbara (fiction)

Barbara is a Bolivian woman who has been in Barcelona for twelve years. She works as a maid and lives with her girlfriend Maribel. One day, her mother informs her that they have arrested Ulises, her eldest son, and Barbara decides to bring him to live with her.


Wilderness (documentary)

This is a movie built from impericia, from misunderstanding, from surprise and mutual amazement; it is a film that reflects on the idea of community, the relationship of mankind with the environment in which nature, beasts and human beings depend on each other to continue inhabiting a barren land.

These titles will be screened exclusively to a film industry professional audience and to a panel of international experts summoned by the Morelia International Film Festival in order to create a unique space for reflection on the selected projects. Additionally, Impulso Morelia 5 grants important awards, both in kind and in cash, that will directly contribute to the conclusion, promotion and visibility of the proposals.

Curated by José María Riba, Impulso Morelia 5 will be held from October 20th to 22nd 2019, during the 17th edition of the Morelia International Film Festival.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS’ PANEL

The Morelia International Film Festival has brought together an international experts’ panel that will analyze with strict, constructive and respectful spirit all the proposals included in Impulso Morelia 5, and will establish a useful dialogue with their creators. The panel will be integrated by John Bailey (USA), Katrin Pors (Denmark), Alice Labadie (France), Jorge Michel Grau (Mexico), Jim Stark (USA), Alejandro Arenas (France) and Meinolf Zurhorst (Germany).

John Bailey. John Bailey’s 50-plus-year career in motion pictures includes his cinematography of mainstream Hollywood films such as Ordinary People (1980), by Robert Redford; The Big Chill (1983), Silverado (1985) and The Accidental Tourist (1988), by Lawrence Kasdan; Groundhog Day (1993), by Harold Ramis; In the Line of Fire (1993), by Wolfgang Petersen, As Good as It Gets 1997), by James L. Brooks, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005) and A Walk in the Woods (2015), by Ken Kwapis and The Way Way Back (2013), by Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, and, as well as such offbeat fare as Tough Guys Don’t Dance (1987), by Norman Mailer, That Championship Season (1982), by Jason Miller, Swimming to Cambodia (1987), by Jonathan Demme, A Brief History of Time (1991), by Errol Morris; and The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002), by Brett Morgen and Nanette Burstein. John was president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 2017 to 2019 and has served as governor of the cinematographers’ branch for 15 years. He is on the Board of Governors of the American Society of Cinematographers, as well as on the Library of Congress’s National Film Preservation Board.

Katrin Pors. Katrin is a Danish producer known for building bridges between Latin America and Northern Europe. She has more than ten years’ experience working as a producer, executive, and co-producer on numerous projects with some of the most esteemed directors in the contemporary art house scene, such as Amat Escalante, Annemarie Jacir, Joachim Trier, Carlos Reygadas, and Ralitza Petrova. Her latest work includes the film that inaugurated the fiftieth edition of Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, Birds of Passage (2018), directed by Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego; the Directors’ Fortnight co-production Petra (2018), by Jaime Rosales; the Sundance premiere Monos (2019), by Alejandro Landes; and White, White Day (2019), by Hlynur Palmason. Pors is among the founders of the Copenhagen-based production company Snowglobe.

Alice Labadie. Alice Labadie has worked for five years as a buyer at Le Pacte, a director-driven French distribution and international sales company. Le Pacte’s latest titles include I, Daniel Blake (2016), by Ken Loach; Shoplifters (2018), by Hirokazu Kore-eda; The Florida Project (2017), by Sean Baker; and El reino (2018) and Madre (2017), by Rodrigo Sorogoyen. Labadie has also worked on the sets of films such as Birds of Passage (2018), by Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego.

Jorge Michel Grau.

His debut feature Somos lo que hay (We Are What We Are) (2010) competed for the Caméra d’Or at Cannes in 2010 (42nd Director’s Fortnight) and won the Silver Hugo Special Jury Prize at the Chicago International Film Festival, the Séquence Prize to Best Film Feature at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, and Best “Next Wave” Film and Screenplay at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, among others. He directed Chalán (Gofer), produced by Canal 22 and IMCINE, and 72, produced by Juan José Campanella and Canana. In 2016, he premiered 7:19, the first Mexican film to have an international Netflix release. In 2019, he will premiere his latest film, Perdida, produced by Dynamo Colombia and Urujuru México.

Jim Stark. American producer. Stark has funded, developed, produced, and sold feature films since 1983. He has worked with Jim Jarmusch, Alex Rockwell, Gregg Araki and Adrienne Shelly, among many others. He co-wrote and co-produced Cold Fever (1995), alongside Fridrik Thor Fridriksson; Factotum (2005), alongside Bent Hammer; and Mirage (2014), alongside Szabolcs Hajdu. He has recently been associated with Tempestad (2016), directed by Tatiana Huezo; The Untamed (2016), by Amat Escalante; Our Time (2018), by Carlos Reygadas; and Foxtrot (2017), by Samuel Maoz.

Alejandro Arenas. Of Spanish origin, Alejandro Arenas has worked in France since 2011. In 2012, having previously worked at Les films du Bélier, he joined Sylvie Pialat and Benoît Quainon’s team at the production company Les films du Worso. He has taken part in over 20 films, including Stranger by the Lake (2013), directed by Alain Guiraudie, and Timbuktu (2014), by Abderrahmane Sissako. In recent years, he has become the company’s head of international productions. Within this role, he has coordinated the French executive production of Quién te cantará (2018), by Carlos Vermut, and of The Whistlers (2019), by Corneliu Porumboiu, screened in competition at the latest Cannes. Since 2018, Arenas has been a member of the French CNC’s Cinémas du Monde commission under its president Charles Tesson.

Meinolf Zurhorst. After studying history of art, film and television and anthropology he worked as a film critic and author of almost 20 books about cinema and actors. He co-founded a production company which produced special interest programs for German TV as well as a company for post- and film-production. Co-writer, director and producer of several documentaries about German cinema and TV. In 1992 he was commissioning editor in the cinema department of ARTE in Strasbourg and, in 1994, head of this department. In 2000 he moved to German broadcaster ZDF to direct their ARTE film department and since 2017 he was head of fiction ZDF/arte. Member of juries in Guadalajara, Sarajevo, Sao Paulo, Thessaloniki, Tallinn, Istanbul and other festivals. Tutor and expert at Mediterranean Film Business School, EAVE, ACE-Ateliers du Cinéma Européen, International Film School Cologne and Bela Tarr’s Film Factory. Since February 2019, Meinolf is consultant, lecturer, tutor and producer.


IMPULSO MORELIA 5 AWARDS

The recognitions that will be granted total more than USD $68,000 in kind and in cash:

  • The Cinépolis Distribución Award consists in a cash incentive of $250,000 MXN destined to post-production services and/or promotion. This incentive will be awarded by the international experts’ panel.
  • Specialized information web portal LatAm cinema.com offers a promotional campaign, which includes one advertising page in one of the magazine’s numbers, with an approximate cost of USD$1,500.
  • Ambulante participates with an award of $50,000 MXN in cash to complete the post-production of a documentary feature. The winning film will be offered to be included in the next edition of Ambulante Film Festival Tour.
  • Estudios Churubusco will award one project with $800,000 MXN in post-production and TXH sound services. The support does not include materials, operators and Dolby license. It is valid for two years, starting from the date granted.
  • The prestigious post-production studio Splendor Omnia will give an award consisting in one week of sound mix and another one of color correction, with an approximated value of $200,000 MXN. The support does not include technicians fees.
