XV years, 15 editions: FICM 2004, 2nd edition

FICM’s second edition took place from October 1 to 9 in 2004. The festival was inaugurated with Walter Salles' The Motorcycle Diaries, starring Gael García Bernal and Rodrigo de la Serna. The actors presented the film together with Dr. Alberto Granados, who accompanied Ernesto Che Guevara on his trip through Latin America, and Aleida Guevara, Che’s daughter.

That year the Guests of Honor were the recognized American director Gus Van Sant and the emblematic Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira, who received the Filmoteca UNAM Medal from Diana Bracho after the screening of his first short film Labor on the Douro River (1931).

Other personalities in attendance at the 2nd FICM were Barbet Schroeder and Fernando Vallejo (Special Guests of the 1st FICM), Fernando Eimbcke, Luis Mandoki, Damián Alcazar, Bruno Bichir, Arcelia Ramírez, Juan Luis Buñuel, María Elena Velasco (better known as “la India Maria”), Carlos Carrera, Guillermo Arriaga, Ana Claudia Talancón and Cecilia Suárez, among other faces of both national and international acclaim.

FICM's second year was the first of the Michoacán Section, an exclusive competition of selected works by filmmakers from or inhabiting Michoacán. Since then, this section has given special visibility to the cinema that’s produced in the region.

A tradition-in-the-making took force as the festival paid homage to a pioneer of Michoacán cinema. On this occasion, the tribute was dedicated to Ezequiel Carrasco, born in Morelia in 1891. The exhibition dedicated to the artist, producer, director, scriptwriter and filmmaker, was a warm recognition of his extensive work.

Alejandro Ramírez Magaña and Daniela Michel, together with director of programming Shannon Kelly, reflected on the role of cinema in the world in the 2nd FICM’s catalogue: “At a time when the global economy, xenophobia, mass migrations, displacement and even the media conspire to isolate and divide us, the creativity and curiosity of the new talents in film and video around the world become increasingly important.”
