Summer 1910. Several tourists have vanished from the local beach. Inspector Machin discovers that the trail leads to the Bruforts, a local family of fishermen. The degenerate bourgeois Van Peteghem family arrive at their holiday villa to take in the sun, but Brufort’s son Ma Loute and Billie Van Peteghem fall in love, which introduces an element of confusion into the lives of all concerned and starts to reveal something of their true characters.
