Marcel Marx has retreated into a voluntary exile in the port city of Le Havre, working as a shoe shiner. He lives happily within the triangle of his favorite bar, his work, and his wife Arletty, when fate suddenly throws an underage immigrant refugee from Africa in his path. At the same time, Arletty gets seriously ill and is bedridden. Marcel has to rise against the cold wall of human indifference with his only weapon of innate optimism and the unwavering solidarity of his neighbors.

With his winnings, he buys what is possibly the worst restaurant in Finland. He hires a Syrian refugee, whom the authorities want to send back to Aleppo, and who is looking for the sister he lost along the Balkan route. Everyone tries to help.
