International premieres of the 17th Morelia International Film Festival

Estos son algunos de los estrenos internacionales que formarán parte de la 17ª edición del Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM).

FICCIÓN

A Hidden Life (2018, dir. Terrence Malick)

Basada en hechos reales. Franz Jägerstätter, campesino austriaco, se niega a luchar junto a los nazis. Declarado culpable de traición por el régimen de Hitler, corre el riesgo de enfrentarse a la pena capital, pero guiado por su fe inquebrantable y el amor por su mujer y sus hijos, Franz sigue siendo un hombre libre. Esta es la historia de un héroe anónimo.

Un día lluvioso en Nueva York (2019, dir. Woody Allen)

La comedia romántica de Woody Allen, UN DÍA LLUVIOSO EN NUEVA YORK, cuenta la historia de la pareja de universitarios Gatsby (Timothée Chalamet) y Ashleigh (Elle Fanning), cuyos planes para un fin de semana romántico juntos en la ciudad de Nueva York se interrumpen de manera súbita. Pronto, ambos se separan e individualmente, tienen una serie de reuniones casuales y aventuras cómicas mientras están solos.

La vida invisible de Eurídice Gusmão (2019, dir. Karim Aïnouz)

Río de Janeiro, 1950. Eurídice, de 18 años, y Guida, de 20, son dos hermanas inseparables. Viven en casa y cada una tiene un sueño: una quiere ser una pianista famosa y la otra, encontrar el amor verdadero. Debido a su padre controlador, se ven obligadas a vivir separadas. Los locos Addams (2019, dirs. Greg Tiernan, Conrad Vernon)

Una película de animación basada en la serie de historietas creadas por Charles Addams sobre una familia macabra y peculiar. En esta historia la familia se enfrenta al presentador de un reality show.

Al ritmo del corazón (2018, dir. Icíar Bollaín)

Narra la vida del bailarín cubano Carlos Acosta, Yuli, desde sus orígenes en un barrio humilde de La Habana, hasta convertirse en la estrella de una de las más grandes compañías de ballet del mundo. Acosta fue el primer bailarín negro en interpretar a Romeo en el Royal Ballet de Londres, donde forjó su carrera durante 17 años. Yuli habla del arte, del sacrificio que supone dedicar la vida a él y, sobre todo, de lo que uno es.

Así habló el cambista (2019, dir. Federico Veiroj)

Umberto Brasue es un cambista que tendrá que sortear su matrimonio, la subversión de la década de 1970 y su código de ética para conservar su nombre en la plaza financiera uruguaya.

Bacurau (2019, dir. Kleber Mendonça Filho, Juliano Dornelles)

En un futuro cercano, el pueblo de Bacurau llora la muerte de su matriarca Carmelita, que falleció a los 94 años. Algunos días más tarde, los habitantes se dan cuenta de que el pueblo ha desaparecido del mapa.

And Then We Danced (2019, dir. Levan Akin)

The Lighthouse (2019, dir. Robert Eggers)

Ambientada a finales del siglo XIX, esta película cuenta la historia de dos encargados de un faro que trabajan juntos en una misteriosa isla perdida de Nueva Inglaterra.

Little Joe (2019, dir. Jessica Hausner)

Alice trabaja para una empresa especializada en desarrollar nuevas especies de plantas. Ahí ha diseñado una bella flor roja con propiedades terapéuticas que puede hacer feliz a su dueño. Alice desobedece las reglas de la empresa y regala una flor a su hijo Joe. A medida que la planta crece, Alice comienza a dudar de su creación: tal vez esta planta no sea tan inofensiva.

Magari (2019, dir. Ginevra Elkann)

Tres hijos de padres divorciados que viven en París con su madre burguesa, ortodoxa y rusa, de pronto son enviados a vivir a Roma con Carlo, su poco convencional padre italiano que se encuentra en quiebra.

Sr. Link (2019, dir. Chris Butler)

Motherless Brooklyn (2019, dir. Edward Norton)

Armado solo con algunas pistas y el poderoso motor de su mente obsesiva, Lionel desentraña secretos muy bien guardados que mantienen el destino de toda la ciudad en equilibrio.

La odisea de los giles (2019, dir. Sebastián Borensztein)

Debido a una estafa realizada por un inescrupuloso abogado y un gerente de banco, que sabían lo que sucedería en Argentina a finales del 2001, un grupo de amigos y vecinos pierden el dinero que habían logrado reunir para revivir una vieja cooperativa agrícola. Entonces deciden organizarse y armar un minucioso plan con el objetivo de recuperar lo que les pertenece.

Papicha (2019, dir, Mounia Meddour)

Nedjma, de 18 años, estudiante alojada en la ciudad universitaria de Argel, sueña con convertirse en estilista. Al caer la noche, sale de la ciudad con sus mejores amigas para acudir a la discoteca donde vende sus creaciones a las “papichas”, las jóvenes argelinas. La situación política y social del país no deja de empeorar. Nedjma se niega a aceptar esta fatalidad y decide organizar un desfile de modas contra todos los obstáculos.

En la Francia del siglo XVIII, una joven pintora, Marianne, recibe el encargo de hacer el retrato de boda de Héloïse sin que ella lo sepa. Marianne debe observar a su modelo durante el día para pintar su retrato en la noche. Día tras día, las dos mujeres se acercan mientras comparten los últimos momentos de libertad de Héloïse.

The Souvenir (2019, dir. Joanna Hogg)

Julie organiza la fiesta de una escuela de cine, donde conoce a un hombre misterioso llamado Anthony. Unos días más tarde, Anthony invita a Julie a un hotel lujoso y le pide quedarse unos días con ella. Así comienza la primera relación seria de Julie. Ignorando a sus amigos y pidiendo prestadas grandes cantidades de dinero a sus padres, Julie se rinde a la relación y prioriza las necesidades de Anthony.

The Traitor (2019, dir. Marco Bellocchio)

Situada a principios de los años 80, cuando la guerra entre capos de la mafia siciliana estaba en su apogeo, Tommaso Buscetta, integrante de la Cosa Nostra, huye de Italia y se esconde en Brasil. Durante su exilio, su clan es asesinado por un ajuste de cuentas. Buscetta es detenido en Brasil y extraditado a Italia. Entonces toma una decisión que cambiará la historia de la mafia: traicionar el juramento hecho a la Cosa Nostra.

Tierra de zombies 2 (2019, dir. Ruben Fleischer)

Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita y Little Rock deciden mudarse al corazón de Estados Unidos. Durante el trayecto deben enfrentarse a nuevas clases de muertos vivientes que han evolucionado desde lo sucedido hace algunos años, así como a algunos supervivientes humanos rezagados. Pero, por encima de todo, tendrán que tratar de soportar los inconvenientes de convivir entre ellos.

El sendero de la anaconda (2019, dir. Alessandro Angulo)

Documental sobre la travesía de dos viejos amigos que exploran una de las zonas más recónditas de la selva amazónica. Wade Davis y Martin von Hildebrand recorren esta región a lo largo del río Apaporis, donde se encuentran con diferentes comunidades que por más de 500 años se han resistido a los cambios de la sociedad colona y han logrado proteger el bosque que los rodea.

Mar de sombras (2018, dir. Richard Ladkani)

Pescadores, funcionarios y conservacionistas se enfrentan a los cárteles de la droga y la mafia china en el mar de Cortés debido al pez totoaba (muy cotizado por sus supuestos poderes milagrosos), pues las profundas redes utilizadas para atraparlo han puesto en riesgo a la vaquita marina.

Where’s My Roy Cohn? (2019, dir. Matt Tyrnauer)

Desde el macartismo hasta Donald Trump, esta película expone el trabajo tras bambalinas del abogado estadounidense Roy Cohn, una constante detrás de las legislaciones que han formado a los Estados Unidos de hoy.

Vittorio Vidali – No soy el que era (2019, dir. Giampaolo Penco)

Nacido en Trieste en 1900, en Estados Unidos Vittorio Vidali organiza manifestaciones para la liberación de los anarquistas Sacco y Vanzetti; en México comienza una relación con Tina Modotti y se convierte en el Comandante Carlos; en Rusia es un agente de la Komintern; en Trieste se opone a Tito; en Roma es senador del PCI... A Rainy Day in New York (2019, dir. Woody Allen)

Two young people decide to spend a weekend in New York, where they are met with bad weather and a series of adventures.

The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão (2019, dir. Karim Aïnouz)

Rio de Janeiro, 1950. Euridice, 18, and Guida, 20, are two inseparable sisters. They live at home, and each has a dream: one wants to become a renowned pianist; the other longs to find true love. Due to their controlling father, they are forced to live without each other. Now separated, they will take control of their destiny, while never giving up hope of being reunited.

Los locos Addams (2019, dirs. Greg Tiernan, Conrad Vernon)

An animated version of Charles Addams’s cartoon series about a peculiar, ghoulish family. In this story, the family squares off against the host of a reality TV show.

This is the story of the Cuban dancer Carlos “Yuli” Acosta, from his origins in a humble Havana neighborhood to his transformation into the star of one of the world’s greatest ballet companies. “Yuli” was the first black dancer to play Romeo at the Royal Ballet in London, where he forged his career for 17 years. Yuli talks about art, about the sacrifices involved in dedicating one’s life to it, and—above all—about one’s true self.

Ford v Ferrari (2019, dir. James Mangold)

Based on the true story of the visionary American car designer Carroll Shelby and the fearless British-born driver Ken Miles. Together, they battled corporate interference, the laws of physics, and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford Motor Company and take on the dominating Enzo Ferrari vehicles at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France in 1966.

Parasite (2019, dir. Bong Joon-ho)

The entire Ki-taek family is unemployed. Gi Woo, the oldest son, starts taking English classes at the Parks’ house. Though they come from completely different worlds, the two families become close—until they stumble into an unexpected situation.

Children of the Sea (2019, dir. Ayumu Watanabe)

Young Ruka’s father works in an aquarium, where she meets Umi and Sora, two boys raised by dugongs. When she starts to realize that they all share a supernatural connection to the ocean, she feels immediately drawn to them. Meanwhile, bizarre sea creatures are appearing all over the world and aquarium animals are vanishing.

The Lighthouse (2019, dir. Robert Eggers)

Set in the late nineteenth century, this film tells the story of two lighthouse keepers who work together on a mysterious lost island in New England.

Little Joe (2019, dir. Jessica Hausner)

Alice works for a company that develops new plant species. There, she has designed a beautiful red flower with therapeutic properties that can make its owner happy. Alice breaks company rules and gives a flower to her son Joe. As the plant grows, Alice starts to doubt her creation: perhaps the plant isn’t harmless after all.

Magari (2019, dir. Ginevra Elkann)

Three kids of divorced parents, living in Paris with their bourgeois Russian-Orthodox mother, are suddenly packed off to Rome to stay with Carlo, their broke and unconventional Italian father.

Missing Link (2019, dir. Chris Butler)

The charismatic Sir Lionel Frost considers himself the world’s foremost investigator of myths and monsters, although none of his high-society peers seems to recognize this. Sir Lionel’s last chance for acceptance by the adventuring elite rests on traveling to the United States to prove the existence of a legendary creature: the missing link.

Motherless Brooklyn (2019, dir. Edward Norton)

1950s New York. Lionel Essrog, a solitary private detective with Tourette syndrome, sets out to solve his friend’s murder. Armed only with a few clues and the powerful engine of his obsessive mind, Lionel unravels well-kept secrets that keep the fate of the entire city hanging in the balance.

Heroic Losers (2019, dir. Sebastián Borensztein)

Falling prey to a scam concocted by an unscrupulous lawyer and a bank manager who knew what would happen in Argentina at the end of 2001, a group of friends and neighbors lose the money they had managed to raise to revive an old agricultural cooperative. When they learn what has happened, the group decides to come together and devise a plan to recover what belongs to them.

Papicha (2019, dir, Mounia Meddour)

Eighteen-year-old Nedjma, a student housed in the university city of Algiers, dreams of becoming a stylist. At nightfall, she leaves the city with her best friends and goes to the club where she sells her creations to the papichas, the young Algerians. The country’s political and social situation gets worse. Nedjma refuses to accept this fate and decides to organize a fashion show against all the obstacles.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019, dir. Céline Sciamma)

In eighteenth-century France, Marianne, a young painter, is commissioned to paint Héloïse’s wedding portrait in secret. Marianne must observe her model by day and paint her portrait at night. The two women grow closer as they share Héloïse’s last moments of freedom.

Julie hosts a film school party where she meets a mysterious man named Anthony. A few days later, Anthony invites Julie to a luxury hotel and asks to stay with her for a few days. Thus begins Julie’s first serious love affair. Ignoring her friends and borrowing large sums of money from her parents, Julie surrenders to the relationship and prioritizes Anthony’s needs.

The Traitor (2019, dir. Marco Bellocchio)

Set in the early 1980s, with the war between Sicilian Mafia bosses in full swing, Tommaso Buscetta, a member of the Cosa Nostra, flees Italy and goes into hiding in Brazil. During his exile, his clan is murdered in a settling of scores. Buscetta is arrested and extradited to Italy. Then he makes a decision that will change the history of the mafia: he will betray the oath he made to the Cosa Nostra.

Tierra de zombies 2 (2019, dir. Ruben Fleischer)

Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock decide to move to the American heartland. Along the way, they must confront new kinds of zombies that have evolved over the past few years, as well as some lagging human survivors. Above all, the four zombie slayers will have to cope with the inconveniences of living among them.

The Path of the Anaconda (2019, dir. Alessandro Angulo)

A documentary about the journey of two old friends who explore one of the most remote areas of the Amazon rainforest. Wade Davis and Martin von Hildebrand travel this region along the Apaporis River, where they meet different communities that have resisted the changes of colonizing society for over 500 years and managed to protect the forest around them.

Sea of Shadows (2018, dir. Richard Ladkani)

Fishermen, conservationists, and Mexican government officials are waging a war against drug cartels and the Chinese mafia in the Sea of Cortez. The conflict centers on the totoaba fish, prized for its supposedly miraculous benefits. The deep nets used to catch this fish have endangered the vaquita marina, the world’s rarest marine mammal.

Where’s My Roy Cohn? (2019, dir. Matt Tyrnauer)

From McCarthyism to Donald Trump, this film exposes the behind-the-scenes work of American lawyer Roy Cohn, a constant presence behind the policies that have shaped today’s United States.

Vittorio Vidali – No soy el que era (2019, dir. Giampaolo Penco)

In the US, Vittorio Vidali, born in Trieste in 1900, organizes demonstrations for the liberation of the anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti. In Mexico, he embarks on a relationship with Tina Modotti and becomes Commander Carlos. In Russia, he is a Comintern agent. In Trieste, he opposes Tito.
