Festival launches FICM Presents

FICM has set in motion a new project called FICM Presents, a series of screenings that will take place throughout the year in the state of Michoacán, different parts of the country and abroad.

FICM Presents aims to give continuity to the dissemination of film cultural and to strengthen the creation of a public eager for new proposals. The project is divided into three areas: Michoacán, National and International.

“We are very proud and excited to start the FICM Presents project, which supports the dissemination of quality cinema at the state, national and international level,” said festival director Daniela Michel. “By starting with an ongoing program at the Cine-Teatro Emperador Caltzontzin in Pátzcuaro, we are strengthening the link with the Michoacán community while contributing to the common good.”

FICM Presents: Michoacán

Guided by the goal of promoting film as an agent of social change and supporting the Michoacán communities in fortifying its social fabric, FICM Presents will organize the exhibition of films and film events in collaboration with various venues, cultural centers, film clubs, independent theaters, universities and festivals of the state of Michoacán.

The driving force of FICM Presents in Michoacán is to create a continuous program for the Cine-Teatro Emperador Caltzontzin in Pátzcuaro. Since 2005 the theater has been home to the extension of the festival, and since 2010, FICM has encouraged and supervised two stages of its restoration. Now, as part of FICM Presents, the Cine-Teatro Emperador Caltzontzin will present four film screenings every Thursday and Sunday throughout the year.

The titles that make up the program at the Cine-Teatro Emperador Caltzontin in Pátzcuaro in March include:

Screenings are open to the public. Matinees cost 10 pesos per person, while evening functions starting at 5 pm are $20 pesos and $10 pesos for students with ID and senior citizens.

The Cine-Teatro Emperador Caltzontzin is located at the Plaza Gertrudis Bocanegra in the center of Pátzcuaro. The building was constructed in 1936 during the administration of President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río. The muralist Roberto Cueva del Río decorated it with a work dedicated to Tanganxuan II, the last emperor or “caltzontzin” of the Purépecha dominion. In 2013, after three years of hard work, the Cine-Teatro Emperador Caltzontzin was remodeled to regain its former splendor as a theater and cultural space.

Thus, FICM Presents will promote the launching and dissemination of Cine-Teatro Emperador Caltzontzin as a community cultural theater.

FICM Presents: National

In order to broaden the range of films available in our country, FICM Presents will offer series and screenings throughout the year at different venues in Mexico, such as the Casa del Lago and LA68 Casa de Cultura Elena Poniatowska. Mexican feature films, documentaries and short films that received awards at FICM, as well as a careful selection of outstanding films by critics and public, will be exhibited.

FICM Presents: International

In order to publicize the production of Mexican cinema and promote exhibitions abroad, FICM Presents will offer film programs in collaboration with various international festivals and institutions, such as The New Best Film Series at Town Hall in New York.
