The Documentary Fuocoammare is Nominated for an Oscar

Fuocoammare, Gianfranco Rosi´s extraordinary documentary, has been nominated for the Best Documentary award at the 2017 Oscars.

Fuocoammare won the Golden Bear at the last edition of the Berlin International Film Festival in 2016, becoming the first documentary ever to win the festival´s most prestigious prize. Berlinale Director, Dieter Kosslick presented the film at the 14th edition of FICM as part of a special Berlinale Spotlight programme, in which a selection of films from the 2016 Berlin Film Festival were presented in Morelia.

Rosi´s film is a portrait of the lives of the inhabitants of Lampedusa - particularly the day to day life of 12-year-old Samuel - and of the immigrants who land on its coastline. Situated 200 kilometers from the Southern Coast of Italy, the island has become the frontline in Europe´s migrant crisis, and the first port of call for hundreds of thousands of migrants from Africa and the Middle East who come seeking a better life.
