Mexican Cinema at the 72nd Venice Film Festival

Mexico will have an important presence at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival with Alfonso Cuarón as president of the jury of the sections in competition and Daniela Michel, general director of FICM, as a member of the jury that will present the “Luigi De Laurentiis” award for Best First Film. In addition, Mexican cinema will be represented at this prestigious event by five productions. Congratulations!

Participating in the main competition will be the Mexico-Venezuela co-production, Desde allá, directed by Lorenzo Vigas and produced by Guillermo Arriaga, Rodolfo Cova, Michel Franco, Edgar Ramírez, Gabriel Ripstein and Lorenzo Vigas. The film will compete for the “Luigi De Laurentiis” award for Best First Film. The short film by this director, Los elefantes nunca olvidan (2004) participated in the 43rd Critics’ Week, a parallel section at the Cannes Film Festival, and won the Special Mariposa Monarca Jury Award at the 2nd FICM.

The Mexican film Un monstruo de mil cabezas, by Rodrigo Plá, will participate in the Orizzonti section, dedicated to works that explore the limits of cinematographic language. Plá also participated at FICM with three films: El ojo en la nuca (2000) at the 3rd FICM, La zona (2007) at the 5th FICM, and with a chapter in the feature film Revolución (2010) at the 8th FICM.

The Mexican work, En defensa propia, directed by Mariana Arriaga, will compete in the Orizzonti – Short Films section. Outside competition, Zero, a co-production between the United States, United Kingdom, Spain and Mexico, and directed by Joe Eggold, Felix Avitia and David Atkinson, will also be shown in that section.

The Venice Film Festival has included the most recent work by celebrated Mexican director Arturo Ripstein, La calle de la amargura, a co-production between Mexico and Spain, among the feature films playing outside the competition.

The 72nd edition of the Venice International Film Festival will take place from September 2 to 12, 2015.
