Birdman by González Iñárritu will inaugurate Venice Festival

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s most recent work, Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance, will be the opening film of the 71st edition of the Venice International Film Festival, which will be held on August 27 to September 6, 2014.

Birdman is a black comedy starring Michael Keaton, with Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts. González Iñárritu is the co-screenwriter (along with Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr. and Armando Bo), producer and director of the film and Emmanuel Lubezki is the cinematographer. The film tells the story of an actor who became famous for portraying an iconic superheroe, but now he is old and must struggle to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, the actor battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career and himself. Below you can see the trailer.

The Venice International Film Festival has included Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance in competition and it will be shown on August 27 at the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema before the opening ceremony. This is the third time that González Iñárritu will participate in the Venice festival: in 2003 he presented 21 Grams, which won the Coppa Volpi award for Best Actor for Sean Penn, and in 2007 he was a member of the jury.
