Alfonso Cuarón to head up the Jury at the Venice Film Festival

The Venice International Film Festival, part of the Venice Bienale, announced recently that president of the jury for its 72nd edition will be Alfonso Cuarón. Together with eight other important figures from the world of international cinema, Cuarón will give out the festival’s official prizes, including the prestigious Golden Lion Award for Best Film.

Cuarón has had a long history at the Venice Film Festival. Gravity, winner of seven Oscars, was the festival’s opening film in 2013 (it was also the opening film at the 11th edition of FICM). In 2006 Children of Men won the Osella prize for Best Photography, for Emmanuel Lubezki. In 2001, Y tu mamá también was part of the official competition, where it achieved excellent results: Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna won the Marcello Mastroianni Award for emerging actors, and Alfonso and Carlos Cuarón won the Osella Prize for Best Screenplay.

The Venice International Film Festival describes Alfonso Cuarón as “one of the most celebrated directors of his generation”. By making Cuarón the head of its jury the festival, the oldest in the world, has officially recognized Curón’s immense talent and importance on an international level. In previous years this post has been held by the composer Alexandre Desplat (2014) and by the director Bernado Bertolucci (2013).
