El FICM da a conocer la programación de su 14ª edición

Hoy, en una conferencia de prensa en la Cineteca Nacional, se anunció la programación de la 14ª edición del FICM, en la cual estuvieron presentes Jorge Sánchez Sosa, Director General del Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía; Juan Manuel Tello, representante de la Secretaría de Turismo del Estado de Michoacán; Viktor Elbling, Embajador de la República Federal de Alemania en México; Thelma Aquique, Secretaria de Turismo del Ayuntamiento de Morelia; Daniela Michel, Directora General del FICM; Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Batel, Vicepresidente del FICM y Ramón Ramírez Guzmán, Director de Relaciones Públicas de Cinépolis.

La parte esencial del Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia son las secciones en competencia: Sección Michoacana, Cortometraje Mexicano, Documental Mexicano y Largometraje Mexicano. Este año, en el marco del aniversario 120 de la primera proyección de cine en México en el Castillo de Chapultepec, el FICM cuenta con 106 trabajos en competencia, más que cualquier año en la historia del festival. La participación será de 60 cortometrajes, 14 documentales, 17 obras michoacanas y 15 largometrajes de cineastas de distintos estados de la República Mexicana, como: Baja California, Jalisco, Sonora, Guanajuato, Puebla, Yucatán, Colima, Chiapas, Estado de México y Michoacán.

Este año, Stella Artois, una marca con más de 600 años de tradición cervecera, se suma a los festejos del Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia con el Premio Stella Artois al Mejor Largometraje Mexicano, un premio que estamos seguros marcará el inicio de un legado en la industria mexicana. Este galardón, consistirá en un incentivo económico de 500,000 pesos.

Por tercer año consecutivo, el festival presenta la Selección de Cortometraje Mexicano en Línea, la cual está compuesta por 34 cortometrajes de la Selección Oficial del 14º FICM. Estos títulos estarán disponibles en línea y gratis a partir del 21 de octubre. El cortometraje que reciba más votos por el público se llevará el premio “Ganador de Cortometraje Mexicano en Línea”.

En el caso de los cortometrajes de animación, documental y ficción, los ganadores serán considerados como elegibles para la nominación al Oscar.

Impulso Morelia

Por segundo año consecutivo programadores de importantes festivales nacionales e internacionales, productores, distribuidores y agentes de ventas serán invitados para participar activamente en Impulso Morelia que este año, además de un programa de películas en post-producción, abre un espacio para proyectos mexicanos en desarrollo.

Impulso Morelia ofrece la posibilidad de entablar un diálogo directo con expertos de la industria nacional e internacional y de establecer vínculos de colaboración que contribuyan a la ejecución o terminación de los proyectos. También reúne importantes apoyos que serán adjudicados por un jurado internacional conformado por Lisa Marie Russo, destacada productora británica, Antonio Saura, productor y director general de la agencia de ventas internacional Latido Films y Vincenzo Bugno, director del World Cinema Fund de la Berlinale.

Jurado

El jurado del 14º FICM estará conformado por: Edouard Waintrop, director de la Quincena de Realizadores del Festival de Cannes; Jay Weissberg, reconocido crítico de Variety y director del Festival de Cine Mudo de Pordenone; Clotilde Coureau, reconocida actriz francesa; Gregory Nava, aclamado realizador y actual Gobernador de la Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas de los Estados Unidos; Michel Ciment, reconocido crítico francés y director de la revista Positif; Elizabeth McIntyre, directora ejecutiva de Sheffield Doc / Fest; Luis Ospina, aclamado realizador colombiano; Diana Sánchez, programadora del Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto; Tom Shoval, director israelí; Olivier Pelisson, miembro del Comité de Selección de la Semana de la Crítica de Cannes; Jonás Cuarón, aclamado director y guionista mexicano; Linda Olszewski, programadora de Shorts International y miembro de la Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas de los Estados Unidos; Gonzalo Rocha, reconocido caricaturista mexicano; y Dolores Heredia, gran actriz y actual presidenta de la Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas.

Homenajeado michoacano

Dentro del marco del Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia, cada año se celebra a una figura importante del cine mexicano nacida en Michoacán. En esta decimocuarta edición, tendremos el honor de rendir tributo a la célebre actriz michoacana Consuelo Frank con una función especial de “La familia Dressel” de Fernando de Fuentes.

Semana de la Crítica

Entre los programas especiales de la 14ª edición, figurará la presentación de películas de la Semana de la Crítica del Festival de Cannes 2016: A Yellow Bird, de de K. Rajagopal (Singapur); Album, de Mehmet Can Mertoglu (Turquía); Diamond Island, de Davy Chou (Cambodia, Francia); Grave, de Julia Ducournau (Francia); One Week and a Day de Asaph Polonsky (Israel); Tramontane, de Vatche Boulghourjian (Líbano); y Mimosas, de Oliver Laxe (España), ganadora del gran Premio de la Semana de la Crítica.

Colaboración Año Dual Alemania-México 2016

Con motivo del Año Dual Alemania-México 2016, el FICM se honra en presentar el Berlinale Spotlight, un programa especial dedicado enteramente al Festival Internacional de Cine de Berlín, curado por su director general, Dieter Kosslick. El programa es un extraordinario recorrido por las diferentes secciones que conforman a la Berlinale. También cuenta con una retrospectiva dedicada al director, guionista, actor y productor Reinhold Schünzel, uno de los cineastas alemanes más populares de la primera mitad del siglo XX.

Secciones paralelas y programas especiales

En colaboración con el British Council México y el Instituto de Cine Británico (BFI), se presentará Shakespeare Lives, programa especial que busca celebrar la obra de Shakespeare este año en que se cumplen cuatro siglos de su fallecimiento.

Gracias al invaluable apoyo de la Cineteca Nacional, la Filmoteca de la UNAM y de Fundación Televisa, se rendirá un homenaje a Julio Bracho, uno de los directores más representativos del cine nacional, contando con funciones especiales de: ¡Ay, qué tiempos señor Don Simón!; Historia de un gran amor; Distinto amanecer; La corte del faraón; Crepúsculo; Rosenda y La sombra del caudillo.

Por otra parte, continuando con la excelente idea del director francés Bertrand Tavernier, quien asistió al FICM en 2007, por noveno año consecutivo se llevará a cabo el programa “México imaginario”, compuesto por películas que muestran a México, su cultura y sus tradiciones, desde la perspectiva de directores extranjeros. En el programa de este año, “México imaginario” contará con: The Forgotten Village, de John Steinbeck; The Aventures of Robinson Crusoe, de Luis Buñuel; The Brave One, de Irving Rapper y Los pequeños gigantes, de Hugo Butler.

Dentro del marco del festival se tendrá el programa especial “Premio Jean Vigo”, en el cual se presentará la cinta ganadora de este año La mort de Louis XIV, de Albert Serra.

Asimismo, con el apoyo de The Criterion Collection, se mostrará un función especial de Campanas a la medianoche, de Orson Welles.

Gracias al apoyo de la Film Foundation, se contará con funciones especiales de Redes, de Fred Zinnemann y Emilio Gómez Muriel, y One-Eyed Jacks, de Marlon Brando.

Sedes

Las sedes de esta decimocuarta edición serán los complejos Cinépolis Morelia Centro y Cinépolis Las Américas. Además habrá funciones gratuitas en la Casa Natal de Morelos, el Aula Mater del Colegio de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, la Plaza Benito Juárez, y conferencias en el Teatro José Rubén Romero. Asimismo, se hará una extensión del Festival en Pátzcuaro, contando con funciones en el “Teatro Emperador Caltzontzin”.

Lo Mejor del FICM en la Ciudad de México

El Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia proyectará a los ganadores y una selección de lo Mejor del Festival en la Ciudad de México en: Cinépolis, del 4 al 10 de noviembre; Cineteca Nacional, 5 y 6 de noviembre; Cine Tonalá, del 4 al 6 de noviembre; Centro Cultural Universitario, del 11 al 13 de noviembre; CENART, 12 y 13 de noviembre y FARO Aragón, 6 de noviembre y del 9 al 12 de noviembre. Finalmente, se llevarán a cabo dos funciones al aire libre: en el Parque México el 11 de noviembre y en Jardín Centenario Coyoacán el 12 de noviembre.

An essential part of the Morelia International Film Festival are the competing sections: Sección Michoacana, Mexican Short Film, Mexican Documentary and Mexican Feature Film. This year, nearing the 120 anniversary of the first screening at the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City, FICM has 106 works in competition, more than any year in the festival’s history. There will be 60 short films, 14 documentaries, 17 works from Michoacan and 15 films by filmmakers from different states of Mexico, such as Baja California, Jalisco, Sonora, Guanajuato, Puebla, Yucatan, Colima, Chiapas, State of Mexico and Michoacan.

This year, Stella Artois, a brand with over 600 years of brewing heritage, joins FICM with the Stella Artois Award for Best Mexican Feature Film, an award that we are confident will mark the beginning of a legacy in the Mexican film industry and will consist of an economic incentive of 500,000 pesos.

For the third consecutive year, the festival will be presenting the Mexican Short Film Selection Online, which is comprised of 34 short films from the Official Selection of the 14th FICM. These titles will be available online and free of charge from October 21st. The receiver of the most votes submitted by the audience will take the "Winner Online Mexican Short Film" prize.

Animated shorts, documentary and fiction winners will be considered eligible for Oscar nomination.

 Impulso Morelia

For the second year in a row, programmers of important national and international festivals, producers, distributors and sales agents will be invited to participate actively in Impulso Morelia, which, this year, in addition to a program of films in post-production, opens a space for Mexican projects in development.

Impulso Morelia offers the opportunity to engage in direct dialogue with experts from the national and international industry and establish partnerships that contribute to the execution or project completion. It also brings significant support to be awarded by an international jury made up of Lisa Marie Russo, a leading British producer, Antonio Saura, producer and general director of the international sales agency Latido Films and Vincenzo Bugno, director of the World Cinema Fund at Berlinale.

 Michoacan Honoree

Within the framework of FICM, an important name of Mexican filmmaking born in Michoacan is celebrated every year. In this fourteenth edition, we have the honor of paying tribute to the celebrated Michoacan actress, Consuelo Frank, with a special feature of "Family Dressel" by Fernando de Fuentes.

Semaine de la Critique

Among the special programing for the 14th edition, the festival will feature screenings of the Cannes 2016 Semaine de la Critique films: A Yellow Bird, by K. Germany-Mexico Dual Year Collaboration 2016

With Germany-Mexico Dual Year 2016 as an excuse, the Morelia International Film Festival is honored to present the Berlinale Spotlight, a special program dedicated entirely to the Berlin International Film Festival, curated by its managing director, Dieter Kosslick. The program is an extraordinary journey through the different sections that make up the Berlinale. It also features a retrospective of the director, screenwriter, actor and producer Reinhold Schünzel, one of the most popular German filmmakers from the first half of the twentieth century.

In addition, director and actor Sebastian Schipper will be in attendance. Schipper acquired international recognition with his fourth feature, Victoria (2015), which claimed the Silver Bear for Best Artistic Contribution at the Berlinale; Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Cinematography and Best Music German Film Awards (Deutscher Filmpreis) and presented at a dozen festivals, including the 2015 Morelia International Film Festival.

National and International Premieres

This year will be showing a selection integrated by over 40 releases of the best in national and international filmmaking. There will be Mexican premieres for Un cuento de circo & A Love Song, by Demian Bichir; El Patriarca, by Raul Martinez, and El Hotel, by Carlos Marcovich.

Among the international premieres presenting: American Honey, Andrea Arnold; Arrival, Denis Villeneuve; Bacalaureat, Cristian Mungiu; The Birth of a Nation, Nate Parker, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival; Elle, Paul Verhoeven; La fille inconnue, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne; Juste la Fin du Monde, Xavier Dolan; La La Land, Damien Chazelle; Loving, Jeff Nichols; Ma Loute Bruno Dumont; Manchester by the Sea, Kenneth Lonergan; Queen of Katwe, Mira Nair; Toni Erdmann, Maren Ade; Nocturnal Animals, Tom Ford; The Salesman, Asghar Farhadi; Sieranevada, Cristi Puiu; and I, Daniel Blake, Ken Loach, winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Opening Film

The extraordinary film Neruda, by the Chilean director Pablo Larrain, starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Luis Gnecco, will be screened at the opening ceremony this year, which will be held the evening of October 21 at Cinépolis Plaza Morelia.

Guests of Honor

This edition is privileged to announce having Willem Dafoe, Giada Colagrande and Audrey Tautou as guests of honor.

It will feature the world premiere of Padre, directed by the Italian Giada Colagrande and co-starring Willem Dafoe.

In addition, the acclaimed actor Willem Dafoe will present a series of his films, including Platoon, Oliver Stone; The Last Temptation of Christ, Martin Scorsese; Light Sleeper, Paul Schrader; Antichrist, Lars von Trier; and Pasolini, Abel Ferrara.

The renowned French actress Audrey Tautou will present the Mexican premiere of L'odyssée, by Jérôme Salle, as well as a special feature of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amélie on the 15th anniversary of its release.

Special Guests

This year, the festival is privileged to have the presence of Adan and Brontis Jodorowsky, who will present Poesía sin fin, by Alejandro Jodorowsky; Szabolcs Hajdu, who will present It's Not the Time of My Life, Grand Prix winning film in the past Karlovy Vary Film Festival; Sebastián Cordero, recognized Ecuadorian director presenting Sin muertos no hay carnaval; Diego Galan, who will present his new documentary Manda huevos; Antonio Echeverria and Alfonso Herrera, who will present the film The Chosen; Jacques Toulemonde, who presented Anna; and Clotilde Coreau, who will present Le Ciel attendra, by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar.

Parallel Sections and Special Programs

In collaboration with the British Council Mexico and the British Film Institute (BFI), "Shakespeare Lives", a special program that seeks to celebrate Shakespeare's work on the four century anniversary of his death, will be presented.

Thanks to the invaluable support offered by Cineteca Nacional, the Film Library of the UNAM and Televisa Foundation, the festival will be paying tribute to Julio Bracho, one of the most representative directors of Mexican cinema, with special features: ¡Ay, qué tiempos señor Don Simón!; Historia de un gran amor; Distinto amanecer; La corte del faraón; Crepúsculo; Rosenda y La sombra del caudillo.

The "Mexico imaginario" program, an excellent idea by French director Bertrand Tavernier, who attended the Morelia International Film Festival in 2007, will be held for the ninth consecutive year. The program consists of films that show Mexico, its culture and traditions, from the perspective of foreign directors. This year, "Mexico imaginario" will feature The Forgotten Village, John Steinbeck; The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of Luis Buñuel; The Brave One, of Irving Rapper and Los pequeños gigantes, Hugo Butler.

The festival will also hold the special program "Jean Vigo Prize", in which the winning film this year, La mort de Louis XIV, by Albert Serra, will be presented.

Also supported by The Criterion Collection, a special feature of Orson Welles's Chimes at Midnight, will be displayed.

Thanks to the support of the Film Foundation, there will be special showings of Redes, Fred Zinnemann and Emilio Gómez Muriel, and One-Eyed Jacks, by Marlon Brando.

Locations

The headquarters of this 14th edition will be the Cinépolis Morelia Centro and Cinépolis Las Americas. There will also be free screenings at the Casa Natal de Morelos, the Aula Mater del Colegio de San Nicolas de Hidalgo, Plaza Benito Juarez, and conferences in the Teatro José Rubén Romero. There will also be an extension of the Festival in Patzcuaro, with screenings in the Teatro Emperador Caltzontzin.

The Best of Morelia International Film Festival in Mexico City

The International Morelia Film Festival will screen the winners and a selection of the Best of the Festival in Mexico City at: Cinépolis, from November 4 to 10; Cineteca Nacional, November 5 and 6; Cine Tonalá, November 4 to 6; Centro Cultural Universitario, November 11 to 13; CENART, November 12 and 13 and FARO Aragon, November 6 and then November 9 to 12. Finally, there will be two outdoor screenings: in the Parque Mexico on November 11 and in Jardín Centenario Coyoacán on November 12.
